A cartoon of 2 brains having a party with the saying "All brains are celebrated here"

My daughter coloured in a brain that she was working on with her speech pathologist (of course in an affirming way - thank you All Adelaide Speech Pathology). She gave it to me because ‘you like brains Mummy’ and asked me to bring it to work.

Yes - I like brains and we talk about them a bit. She knows her brain is different and now her little sister knows hers is too. We have used the word ‘Autism’ but the conversation didn’t start there. Miss 7 knows her brain allows her to collate an extraordinary amount of animal facts and Miss 4 knows hers helps her ‘know almost everything’. Let’s hope she keeps her confidence 😊.

They both know that kind grown ups like speech pathologists and occupational therapists help them and sometimes they need things to happen in a certain way. We can add more to the explanation when it comes up.

In clinic, I share some of the following resources from Onwards and Upwards Psychology.

I often give clients a copy of ‘My Identity Story’, which is available to purchase electronically on their website. This is a great affirming resources which is probably suitable for kids about 5-10 ish. The littler ones will need more support with it. I do a page a session with younger clients as that works best.
